Introduction
Fudan University (Fudan) is a famous multi-disciplinary and comprehensive institution of higher learning in China and the whole world at large. It boasts 29 affiliated schools and departments, 306 research institutes, 5 National Key Labs and 11 National Key Disciplines, 5 Scientific Innovation Platforms of the Ministry of Education “985 Project” (Phase II), and 7 National Philosophy and Social Sciences Innovation Bases. Fudan has lots of high quality faculty. There are 2,481 teachers and researchers, including over 1,400 professors and associate professors, 35 Chinese Academy of Sciences academicians and Chinese Academy of Engineering academicians, 1,011 Ph.D. candidate mentors, 25 Changjiang Scholar Lecture Professors, 50 Chair Professors, and 10 Chief Scientists of the National Key Basic Research Development Plan. Fudan has 10 affiliated hospitals such as Zhongshan Hospital and Huashan Hospital. Fudan is a good incubator for unleashing the potential of faculty and students to jointly conduct innovative teaching and research.
Fudan’s graduate education dates back to 1923. Before 1949, there were relatively a small number of graduates, and the graduate education witnessed slow development. From October, 1949 to December, 1965, we enrolled and cultivated 651 graduates in total. On November 6, 1984, the Graduate School of Fudan University was officially established. On January 25, 1985, the Graduate School of Shanghai Medical University was officially founded. Both were among the first 22 graduate schools after China’s universities officially resumed enrolling graduates. With the merger of Fudan University and Shanghai Medical University in April, 2000, the two graduate schools were combined into a brand-new one, Fudan University Graduate School. Since then, the graduate education of Fudan has been developing by leaps and bounds.
The Graduate School is an important base of cultivating graduates for China. Currently, there are over 16,000 graduates on campus. It boasts 24 Key Disciplines of Ph.D. Programs, 3 Key Disciplines for Master’s Programs, 153 Disciplines and Majors for Ph.D. Programs, 219 Disciplines and Majors for Master’s Program. In addition, it has 1 Professional Ph.D. Program, 10 Professional Master’s Programs.
Till 2007, we have enrolled 47, 213 graduates of degree programs, including 12,435 Ph.D. candidates, 34,265 Master’s Degree candidates. We have conferred 36,914 degrees, including 29,358 Master’s Degrees and 7,556 Doctorates on qualified students.
The top priority of the Graduate School is “improving the quality of graduate cultivation”. We take a series of measures to enhance the innovation capacity of graduates and foster development mechanism and academic atmosphere. We proactively initiate the reform of admission mechanism, expand Ph.D. candidate mentors’ judgment in the process of admission, and attract outstanding students through a wealth of preferential treatments on the basis of their talents and potentials. We improve the graduate curriculum through all-round development of graduate courses and textbooks. We unleash the innovative potential of graduates through strict scientific training. We put in place the thesis prospectus review, mid-term review and Ph.D. candidate qualifying exam to guarantee the smooth progress of each student in their research. Therefore, the cultivation quality has been greatly strengthened.
We adhere to the strategy of modernization, make great efforts to adjust disciplinary structure of graduate education, and develop the cultivation of graduates of professional degrees. We have accomplished a great deal and won wide recognition from society. From 1999 to 2007, 45 articles by Fudan graduates have been rewarded with the titles of China’s National 100 Top Dissertation Winners, ranking third in China’s institutions of higher learning. During the past 5 years, Fudan graduates have made a breakthrough by publishing 5 articles in a host of top international periodicals such as Science and Nature.
The Graduate School proactively promotes internationalization of higher education and carries out wide-ranging international academic exchange and cooperation. We have successfully cooperated with lots of world-renowned institutions of higher learning to conduct joint research and cultivation of graduates. We have also established strategic partnership with Yale University, Waseda University (Japan), and National University of Singapore.
Strengthening graduate education development is the linchpin of Fudan’s efforts to build a world top-class university. The whole faculty and staff of the Graduate School are trying their utmost to search for excellence in a down-to-earth and innovative manner, to develop Fudan University Graduate Education into a famous and quality brand, and to cultivate more outstanding innovative talents for China.
